What can I do if my first submission did not get approved?

www.Shutterstock.com

What can I do if my first submission did not get approved?

If the first set of images you submitted did not reach the minimum of 1 approved image, your account status will be reset back to review mode and you will need to submit up to 10 images again. There is no limit to the number of times you can try to pass the initial review and once at least 1 piece of content is approved, you can begin submitting without any limitations.

To review the reasons the images you submitted were not accepted, please log in to your Shutterstock account and review the information in the window. You can also click the link in the email that was sent to you after the review. You can find expanded explanations for rejection reasons and additional suggestions in our Support Center Content rejection reasons section.

While you are preparing your next submission you still have full access to all the tools available in your contributor account and resources such as our Contributor Forum. We also highly recommend you review these useful resources for new Shutterstock contributors:
Contributor Blog - Our blog for stock contributors is loaded with articles and resources.

We prefer the following:

  • MotionJPEG - Non-DV interlaced video. Use the 75% / high quality level.
  • DVCPro
  • ProRes 422 / 422 HQ / 4444 – Export with as little compression as possible.
  • H.264 - If encoding to this format use the “best” quality.
  • PNG - Only use for footage (animation) requiring an alpha channel.

Audio
Footage should not contain any audio unless it enhances the clip, or is considered editorial content. For a more detailed explanation of our audio policy, please read Can I submit footage with audio?

Mobile device videos
We will accept HD video recorded with a mobile device but please keep the following in mind:
  1. When transferring your footage from your phone to your computer please be sure to use the device cable. Emailing/messaging the video as an attachment will result in loss of quality.
  2. Please keep in mind that on most phones the user-facing camera has a much lower resolution than the camera facing away from the user. We recommend you to only use the camera with the highest resolution

Quality:
Video clips that are submitted to Shutterstock must be of professional quality and each clip will be evaluated by a reviewer. You can learn more about our review process here: How is content reviewed?
Technical Specifications:
Step 1: Upload Your Content
All footage must be uploaded via FTP, you can learn more about it here: How do I upload content via FTP? If you experience issues with uploading, check out this troubleshooting guide: How can I resolve uploading issues?
Step 2: Tagging and Metadata
Once your clips have successfully uploaded via FTP you will need to enter titles, keywords, and categories using the Content Editor. This information is known as metadata, and makes it possible for people to discover your photos. We’ve published some tips here: Maximize Your Visibility: Keyword and Title Best Practices.
Metadata can be added to multiple clips at once by multi-selecting them, or using the Select All feature. Changes you make will apply to ALL selected clips.
In this step, you can also add any of the following, if necessary:

Step 3: Submit Your Content
Once your content is prepared for Submission, click Select All at the top left of the Content Editor window and then click the Submit button.

If you are not quite ready to submit at this time, you can click "Save Work" and save your uploaded content for submission at a later time. You have up to 21 days to submit uploaded content for review. If you do not submit your work to us within that timeframe, it will automatically be deleted from our servers.
If after clicking Submit you receive a message that some of the clips contain errors, please click "continue” to go back to the Content Editor and correct each of the clips that are marked in red If necessary.

After you have entered any necessary corrections, select the images and click on "Submit for Review" again. This message is only a suggestion, so if you feel that you entered all the titles and keywords correctly, simply "Select: All" and click Submit again without entering any changes.
Once you have successfully submitted your photos for review, you will see this message:

How can I resolve uploading issues?

If you are having problems uploading your content it is most likely that the files are delayed in the transfer and they may take some time to reach your content editor. So, we first ask you to wait some time before uploading again or contacting us.
Troubleshooting uploading:
  • Make sure your browser is up to date, and that there are no problems with your internet connection or firewall. You may want to reset your internet connection or try a different browser - for FTP we recommend the most recent version of Firefox or Chrome and Cyberduck or Filezilla as your FTP Client
  • If the files did not transfer correctly after some time, we recommend removing the unprocessed content and uploading them again.
  • File names may contain only the characters a-z, A-Z,0-9, and *underscore* ( _ ).  Accented latin characters, and characters in non-latin alphabets are not permitted. Punctuation other than underscores (brackets, parentheses, quotation marks, etc.) are not permitted.
  • We recommend uploading content in batches that contain no more than 25 clips.
  • If you are uploading vectors with accompanying jpegs and there is a message that there was no matching jpeg, it means that the two files were accidentally processed separately, please remove both files and try again.
  • If you are uploading vectors with jpeg illustrations and you receive the message that the jpeg is too small ("must be over 4MP"), it also means that the two files were accidentally processed separately, please remove both files and try again.
  • If you receive the error message: "The clip's metadata could not be read, or the clip was only partially uploaded. Width: (unknown) Height: (unknown) Aspect: (unknown) Codec: (unknown)" it means that we did not receive the complete upload, most likely due to a transfer hiccup. Please remove the file, and try again.
  • If you receive an error message in your FTP client about TLS settings, please turn TLS off.
  • Set the FTP client to Passive Mode.
  • If none of these troubleshooting tips work, turn on logging in your FTP client and email a copy of the FTP log and the date of the upload log to us at submit@shutterstock.com.
